Ethos Welcomes Dr. Shawn Smith
Dr. Shawn A. Smith is an Indianapolis native who has served as Superintendent of the Metropolitan School District (MSD) of Lawrence Township since January 2014, leading one of Indiana's largest and most diverse school districts.
Under his leadership, the district launched a Teacher Leadership Academy, opened Lawrence Advance Academy, and completed a district-wide 1:1 device rollout, while also expanding Spanish Dual Immersion and STEM programming. Graduation rates have climbed significantly during his tenure, and early childhood education has been strengthened through NAEYC accreditation and expanded preschool access.
Dr. Smith has also led a major Blue Ribbon Facilities Plan, passed the district's first-ever capital referendum, and kept Lawrence Township on strong financial footing—all while growing enrollment and building hundreds of community and business partnerships. His work has earned him recognition across the state and region, and he regularly speaks and serves on advisory boards focused on education, community, and youth development.
Before becoming superintendent, Dr. Smith held building and district leadership roles in the MSD of Pike Township and MSD of Washington Township, starting his career as a social studies teacher. He holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and an Ed.S. in School Administration from Indiana State University, along with graduate and undergraduate degrees from Indiana University.
Dr. Smith is the proud father of three adult children, Dr. Olivia Smith, Maya Smith, and Jordan Smith.
